Signal Top 10% of British households held 43% of wealth, bottom half 9%
Summary
In describing how risks fall unevenly on vulnerable people, the report points to the heavily skewed distribution of wealth in the UK. Between April 2018 and March 2020, the richest tenth of households in Great Britain owned 43% of all wealth. Over the same period, the poorer half of households owned only 9%. Looking at regions, London had the highest wealth inequality. In the same chapter the report records that UK income inequality has stayed at a similar level for over a decade and ranked seventh highest in the OECD in 2021. The report explains that such economic gaps are closely tied to health inequalities, and that groups with fewer resources have less capacity to prepare for and recover from crises.
