Issue Global antimicrobial use stemmed as in the UK
Summary
Among the longer-term uncertainties, the report sees a positive possibility in halting the global growth of antimicrobial use. If worldwide use stops rising, as has already happened in the UK, the evolution of resistance could be slowed. The UK has cut human antibiotic use in recent years, and use in livestock has fallen by 59% since 2014. Globally, however, human antibiotic consumption rose by 46% between 2000 and 2018, and livestock use is estimated to have grown by about 58% between 2010 and 2020. The report regards AMR as an international problem that no country can solve alone, and it explains that the UK funds action in low- and middle-income countries through the Fleming Fund and the Global AMR Innovation Fund.
