Summary

Gartner's fourth trend describes multiagent systems, in which groups of specialised AI agents cooperate to finish complicated workflows. Every agent takes on one specific task, which Gartner says improves efficiency and scalability compared with monolithic AI solutions. The trend is driven by the difficulty single-agent AI has with multistep processes, and multiagent designs enable modular automation and integration across platforms. Gartner sketches three phases, from multiple agents hosted on one platform, to agents on different platforms interacting through protocols, to a global internet of agents that discover and interact with one another. It forecasts that most multiagent systems will use narrowly specialised agents by 2027 and many will work across vendors by 2028.
