Signal Younger Koreans and Japanese view each other far more favorably than older generations
Summary
Mutual perceptions between the peoples of Korea and Japan are described as more positive than ever, a warm current at the civilian level. EAI survey results show that young people in both countries hold far more favorable views of the other country than older generations, especially the elderly. The future generation shares an identity as advanced democracies that respect universal values, possess advanced technology and enjoy high living standards. Unlike older generations locked in an identity clash of empire versus colony, young people tend to judge each other by universal or advanced-country standards rather than feelings of superiority or inferiority. By experiencing each other directly through cultural exchange and tourism, they are shedding the negative stereotypes held by their elders.
