Issue Offenders hacking connected devices and GPS to track targets
Summary
Looking further ahead, the report suggests new technologies may allow offenders to hack Internet of Things devices and GPS software in order to track and monitor the people they target. This is presented alongside the concern that children's rising use of electronic devices could increase the risk from online groomers. In its cyber security chapter the report also says the Internet of Things adds vulnerabilities, and that while consumer device security has been improved through legislation, action is needed on enterprise devices too. The Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Act requires minimum security standards for consumer connected devices in the UK and has reduced their vulnerability. The present trend of crime groups using technology to hide their activity and stay ahead of police forms the backdrop to this concern.
