Signal Capital-region movers skew older and more family-driven than movers from neighbouring provinces

Summary

In most innovation cities, people in their twenties form the largest group of newcomers regardless of where they come from. Movers from the capital region, however, include a relatively higher share of people in their thirties and forties, while those from neighbouring provinces are more strongly concentrated in their twenties. Reasons for moving also differ by origin, since capital-region movers cite a mix of family and job reasons whereas nearby movers lean more clearly toward jobs. The job orientation of nearby movers is especially pronounced in Chungbuk, at 52.1 percent, and Jeju, at 46.6 percent. The report describes this as a structural difference between the two streams of migrants rather than a random variation. It adds that gaps in everyday services such as education, health care, culture and childcare probably held back family moves from the capital.
