Issue A narrowing window to bend the curves within this decade
Summary
Although seven of nine boundaries are breached and all are worsening, the report holds that Earth's biological, physical and chemical resilience still leaves a chance to cut risks and return toward the safe operating space. Accelerating warming and signs that natural buffers such as the land carbon sink are weakening, however, show that this window is closing fast. The report stresses that bending the curves within this decade could set societies on course for a safer and more just future. The tools exist and some steps have been taken, but despite positive developments it judges current efforts far from sufficient. Only urgent, ambitious and decisive action across every sector of society can bring humanity back inside the safe operating space of a healthy planet. The report calls this return the defining task for a stable and livable future.
