Signal About 42% of the labour force with a migration background around 2050
Summary
The demographic institute NIDI projects that around 2050 roughly 42 per cent of the Dutch workforce will have a migration background. The report expects this to reshape the composition not only of the labour market but of society as a whole. Behind it lies a demographic pattern in which net migration has run well above 100,000 a year recently while natural increase has turned negative. The report's economy chapter expects the Netherlands to keep depending heavily on knowledge and labour migrants for the growth of its knowledge economy and for the transitions it must achieve. Given the lasting weight of migration, the report concludes that diversity is becoming the norm in many places across the country.
