Signal Italy extends border controls with Spain as about ten EU countries reintroduce temporary internal checks
Summary
Italy reintroduced temporary border controls with Spain in August at their air and sea borders and has extended them until at least October 15. Spain has reciprocated with controls on its borders with Italy. According to the report, around ten countries have reported temporary controls at some internal borders in recent months. Austria notified controls in September at its land borders with Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovenia, and Germany runs controls at land borders with all its neighbours. The Schengen Borders Code allows temporary reintroduction when a country faces a serious threat to public policy or internal security, initially for up to 30 days and extendable under certain conditions. Italy's foreign minister Antonio Tajani said the measures are not against Spain but reflect a duty to protect borders, while The Good Lobby disputes the justification, noting that none of the migrants who arrived in Ceuta were transferred to Italy.
