Trend Healthy longevity is reframed as workforce infrastructure rather than personal health
Summary
GWI's Workplace Wellbeing Initiative argues that longevity should now be understood as healthspan, meaning the years lived in good health without serious disease or disability. Research in neuroscience and aging shows that brain health, muscle and bone strength, metabolic control and stress resilience shape not only quality of life but also sustained performance over longer careers. Many countries have entered super-aging status, and retirement ages keep rising across the OECD, so employers depend more on mid- and late-career staff. By 2027, 46% of employers worldwide are projected to make wellbeing foundational to their human capital strategy. Investment in brain health is estimated to avert 267 million disability-adjusted life years by 2050 and add up to 6.2 trillion dollars in GDP. The Initiative treats healthy longevity as a structural question of workforce design.
