Signal 23 NATO allies expected to meet 2% of GDP on defence in 2024
Summary
The report uses NATO to show that the picture for international institutions is not wholly negative. As geopolitical tensions have intensified, more member states have moved to honour NATO's defence commitments. Twenty-three members were expected to devote 2% of GDP to defence in 2024, compared with only three in 2014. The UK itself plans to raise its own defence budget to 2.5% of GDP starting in April 2027. The 2023 Integrated Review Refresh saw the UK pledge to be a leading NATO contributor and to develop its forces to NATO standards. The Prime Minister has also described NATO once more as the cornerstone of British security.
