Signal UK and Canadian wealth growth slipped in local currency while Canadian equity lifted paper wealth
Summary
MGI finds that the United Kingdom and Canada both saw slight declines in household wealth growth in 2025 when measured in their own currencies. In Canada, domestic equity markets appear to have boosted paper wealth. The same equity gains also slightly rebalanced Canada's positive international financial position, since the country on net owns more equity issued abroad. Equity plays a large role for Canadian households, making up more than a third of their wealth, while real estate values in Canada declined over the year. The report presents these cases as part of a year in which wealth drivers differed substantially from one country to the next.
