Issue Agenda 9: Strengthening science and technology against industrial accidents and cyber threats
Summary
KISTEP finds Korea's industrial safety management to be run around post-accident response and regulation, with little shift toward proactive risk prediction and prevention. Ageing equipment at power plants and chemical plants is a major risk that existing manuals and camera-based monitoring cannot capture in real time. The agenda's first task develops intelligent sensing and big-data risk prediction, real-time digital-twin disaster simulation and training platforms, and robots and automation for hazardous sites such as collapses, fires and toxic leaks. The second task builds cyber resilience, including security built into supply chains and software development. The third task strengthens technology security governance, including an integrated safety and security assessment system and training for specialists in converged cyber-physical environments such as smart factories and smart cities.
